Guide for CWT Wastewater Generators

The following is a helpful guide to generators of CWT Wastewater:

  1. Make sure the facility you are using now or in the future is a permitted CWT facility. Just as important is the type of CWT Permit they were issued.

  2. Identify what CWT Subcategory your wastewater waste stream falls into. (Subcategory A Metal-Bearing Wastewater, Subcategory B Oily Wastewater, Subcategory C Organic Wastewater, or Subcategory D a combination of Metal-Bearing, Oily, and Organic Wastewater.)

  3. Request a copy of the CWT facility's permit to review their effluent limits for metals, oils, and organics. (Remember, Subcategory A Metal-Bearing Facilities can only treat Metal-Bearing Wastewater, Subcategory B Oily Wastewater Facilities can only treat Oily Wastewater, Subcategory C Organic Wastewater Facilities can only treat Organic Wastewater, and Subcategory D Wastewater Facilities can treat a combination of Metal-Bearing, Oily, and Organic Wastewater waste streams.)

  4. Request a list of "TREATMENT EQUIPMENT" the CWT facility has installed and operating at their site. (Remember, the CWT permitting process is driven by the requirement by the permitted site to have the necessary equipment to treat the wastewater they are accepting.)

  5. Should you have concerns or questions the CWT facility has not answered, call the City / County Pretreatment Coordinator who issued the CWT Permit to the facility. The Pretreatment Coordinator can supply you with type of permit, type of treatment equipment at the site, and the permitted facility's effluent limits.

  6. The EPA has a CWT Guide for Generators and Facilities. The guide can be viewed at www.epa.gov/OST/guide/cwti.html
